Daniel Caligiuri: The three points were there for the taking

Mixed feelings followed Schalke’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach. On one side, the Knappen were pleased with their performance but, on the other side, there was a feeling that the win could have been theirs. We discover what they had to say.

Daniel Caligiuri:

Today, most things seemed to go against us. After the red card we were a bit disorganised but we sorted that out relatively quickly. We didn’t give much away and had chances to score ourselves. The win was there for the taking. We wanted the three point but when you’ve been a man down for 80 minutes you can’t complain. We were solid at the back and didn’t give Gladbach a sniff. In the second half, we controlled the game. I was confident with the penalty, I’m glad it went in the corner.

Leon Goretzka:

We can be very happy with our willingness to get stuck in and the passion we showed on the pitch today. The atmosphere was brilliant in the Arena. It’s just a shame we couldn’t get three points for our fans. It’s impressive that you can say Gladbach were fortunate to hold on and we were close to winning despite being down to 10 for so long. When you work so hard without the ball, it’s tough to keep your cool in front of goal. Today we definitely could have won. At half time, we said to ourselves: “If any team can do it, we can!” We rallied and put in a great second half performance. Credit to the team. I’m certain that our hard work will be rewarded in the end.

Christian Heidel:

Sure, we wanted to win but, when you play against a team like Gladbach with 10 men for 80 minutes, you can be happy with a point. It feels almost like a win and we deserve to feel that way. The result means we have a five point gap to fifth place with two games to go. The red card changed the game. Lots will be said about the red card and the penalty but I want to focus on how we played. I’ve seen the incident several times and I don’t think it’s a sending off. He’s not hit him and I wish the referee had looked at the scene on the monitor himself. It’s true that his hand shouldn’t be up there though.
