Domenico Tedesco: A game of two halves

Domenico Tedesco came on top of a close encounter against his friend Julian Nagelsmann's side today in a 2-1 win. The two coaches shared their thoughts on the game in the VELTINS Arena this evening.

Domenico Tedesco:

Today we saw two completely different halves of football. In the first half, we dominated physically and played the ball well between our two strikers and attacking midfielder. We put our opponents under so much pressure and they had problems dealing with it. We deserved to be leading 2-0 at half time.
Hoffenheim switched to a 3-4-3 after the break. So we changed to a 3-4-3 too. At the end they then went into a 4-3-3. We reacted by going into a 5-2-1-2, like we did in Munich, so we could defend with a high line. We didn’t do that very well at the end. We were under pressure on the ball and that’s why we conceded. We played well overall, but we have much to improve upon. We now need to recharge the batteries quickly, as we’ve got Bayer Leverkusen next week and they’re one of the best teams in the league. It’ll be a tough task.

Julian Nagelsmann:

I’d like to congratulate Domenico Tedesco and Schalke, we lost the game in the first 32 minutes today. We were half asleep, weren’t hungry enough, didn’t make the opposition work for it and defended poorly. We also committed too many fouls in the opening half hour, knowing that set pieces are one of Schalke’s strengths. We saw how good they are from dead ball situations for the first goal, then we practically gifted them their second. We were too defensively orientated there, even though we do like to play out from the back. When you do that, mistakes can happen, and it’s no use us talking about how this was an avoidable goal now.
In the second half, we were better in my opinion, but couldn’t reward ourselves in the end. It’s not easy being 2-0 down against a team that defends as well as Schalke. We could have scored another in the last half an hour and if we’d played an extra half an hour, we might have found that equaliser, but obviously we didn’t get that time.
