Domenico Tedesco: You could sense our uncertainty

The moods of the two head coaches after Saturday’s (2/3) defeat to Fortuna Düsseldorf couldn’t be more different. While Friedhelm Funkel was delighted with his side’s thumping win, Domenico Tedesco was hugely disappointed. schalke04.de has summarised their post-match reactions, as well as Daniel Caligiuri’s.

Domenico Tedesco

Domenico Tedesco:

That was an extremely bad performance. It was too flat and lifeless and we didn’t play with enough spirit. You could sense our uncertainty after just our second pass in the game. We lost possession so many times, which you cannot afford to do against them. As a result, we conceded several goals. We had trained really well this week and I had a good feeling before the game. In the game itself we were really nervous. The fans were understandably frustrated and aggressive. I apologised for the performance, which was the least we could do in this situation. We are right down in a relegation battle now and our character will be questioned.

Friedhelm Funkel:

I’m naturally really pleased with my team’s excellent performance today. We learned our lessons from the defeat here in the DFB-Pokal, when we didn’t defend well enough – we did today though. We based our game on our three pacey strikers and counter attacks. We had plenty of counter chances and took full advantage of them. The team was well-disciplined and barely let Schalke have any shots on goal. I think the win was deserved. We still need a few more points to reach our goal, but I’m certain we will reach that if we play like we did today.

Daniel Caligiuri:

The situation is what it is. It’s important that we fight for Schalke. Our footballing solutions are the second most important thing right now, as we firstly need to give 100% and have the right mentality. Schalke have always been known for this attitude – but today that wasn’t the case.
