Leon Goretzka: I’ve only scored penalties in training until now

After the win in Berlin, goalscorers Leon Goretzka and Guido Burgstaller shared their thoughts on the game and the red card for Hertha BSC.

Leon Goretzka

Leon Goretzka:

It was a hard-fought win. It’s never easy to come here and win but Hertha BSC motivated us with their claims that the big opponents were coming but it was time for Schalke beforehand. It’s done us good to get some points on the board away from home and we deserved to. I think we dominated the game and had a lot of possession even before the red card. We found the solutions to any questions they posed. It was my first ever penalty in a Schalke shirt. Previously, I’d only ever taken them in training! I’ve always said I’d like to take over the responsibility at some point so I decided to today.

Guido Burgstaller:

I’m happy that we can take the three points back to Gelsenkirchen and I could contribute to the win with a goal. I thought we had an excellent game. It wasn’t a case of Hertha being poor at all. In the first half, we weren’t able to get into enough threatening positions going forward but, after the red card, that changed in the second half. Thankfully, Genki Haraguchi didn’t get me with the full force of his boot so I was okay. I thought a red card was reasonable. He caught me at speed with an outstretched boot.
