S04 lose the derby 2-1

After not losing any of their last five derby encounters, FC Schalke 04 were on the wrong end of the scoreline on Saturday (8/12). In the 153th meeting between the two sides, Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 thanks to goals from Thomas Delaney (7’) and Jadon Sancho (74’). Daniel Caligiuri had earlier equalised from the penalty spot after around an hour.

McKennie and Harit in the starting XI

Head coach Domenico Tedesco made two changes to his side, with Weston McKennie and Amine Harit coming in for Suat Serdar and Haji Wright. Serdar came on as a substitute in the second half, but Wright wasn’t included in the squad.

S04 concede an early goal

BVB took the lead very early on thanks to Thomas Delaney. The Dane headed home a Marco Reus free-kick in the 7th minute. The Royal Blues could have had a good chance to equalise three minutes later, but referee Daniel Siebert didn’t award a penalty against an apparent Axel Witsel handball. In the game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim last week it would probably have been given!

The big chance for 1-1 came in the 28th minute, but Schalke couldn’t take their chance. From a Bastian Oczipka corner, the ball fell to Guido Burgstaller in the six-yard area, but he couldn’t beat Roman Bürki. Paco Alcacer had earlier narrowly missed with his curling drive from just outside the box. Guido Burgstaller’s day was over just before the half-time break, as he couldn’t play any longer carrying his injury and was replaced by Hamza Mendyl.

Caligiuri scores from the spot, Sancho wins it

Schalke started the second half positively, but were unable to carve out any notable opportunities. That was until the 61st minute though. Daniel Caligiuri converted a penalty to level things up. The penalty was only given after intervention from the video assistant, after a clear foul on Amine Harit by Marco Reus.

BVB upped the tempo again after the equaliser and tried to break down Schalke’s defence. Jadon Sancho played a one-two with Raphael Guerreiro that left him through on goal, and the England international curled the ball in past Ralf Fährmann (74’). Just five minutes later, Marco Reus had a similar chance, but was denied by Ralle. BVB had another opportunity to increase their lead before full time, but Guerreiro could only hit the post. Schalke didn’t create any clear chances in the final stages of the game.

Two games in a week: Moscow and Augsburg

Schalke’s next game comes on Tuesday, when they welcome Lokomotiv Moscow to the VELTINS Arena in their final Champions League group stage game. The match kicks off at 18:55 CET, and the Royal Blues will be coming up against former players Jefferson Farfan and Benedikt Höwedes.

S04 are back in action next Saturday away at FC Augsburg (15/12).
