Domenico Tedesco: We made mistakes that we shouldn’t have

Both head coaches naturally agreed that Manchester City’s home win was fully deserved in the Etihad Stadium. Domenico Tedesco and Pep Guardiola gave their opinions on the one-sided 90 minutes. schalke04.de has summarised the reactions of the two coaches.

Domenico Tedesco

Domenico Tedesco:

We are extremely disappointed about the match and the scoreline. Only one team enjoyed tonight’s game. We did alright in the first half an hour. Our plan was to not allow them any space and chances early on and then attack them in the second half. We then conceded a penalty, which didn’t have to be given. After that we just collapsed. Tonight I experienced the biggest capitulation as a coach. We made mistakes that you can’t afford to make against Man City.

We switched to a diamond formation at the start of the second half, with which we wanted to give ourselves a better grip on the game and show a different side to our game, but we noticed very quickly that Man City were outplaying us. We need to make sure we muster up our strengths again quickly, recuperate and move forward. We need to get this game out of our heads quickly and focus on Leipzig. One thing is certain: We will not give up. If we don’t believe in ourselves now, then who will?

Pep Guardiola:

We’re glad to have qualified for the quarter-finals. That was our main aim for tonight and we’ve taken this task very seriously. It isn’t easy to score seven goals in a Champions League match. In the first twenty minutes, we maybe had the first leg result in the back of our minds. After we took the lead, we were much more patient and played well. Most importantly, we played unbelievably well in the second half. At times, they played us into a frenzy. We didnt’t allow our opposition any room on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes.

We’re now excited to find out who we will face in the quarter-finals. My colleagues and I would like to wish Domenico Tedesco and FC Schalke 04 all the best for their remaining matches in the Bundesliga.
