Matija Nastasic: We’re the underdogs, but still have a chance

Matija Nastasic has been a Royal Blue since January 2015, when he signed from Manchester City. He made 51 competitive appearances for the Sky Blues and won the Premier League and League Cup. “I have a lot of memories of my time in Manchester. Looking back, I had two very enjoyable years at City,” said the defender.

It’s no surprise that the upcoming game isn’t just a special game for Schalke, but also for Nastasic. “We are facing one of the best teams in the whole of Europe”, said the left-footed player. “City basically don’t have any weaknesses. They score lots of goals, are technically amazing, press effectively and have great players in every position.”

Delayed joy over the reunion

Immediately after the draw was made, Nastasic wasn’t too happy, but eventually came round to the idea of facing his former club. “We won’t let ourselves be beaten for kick-off. Obviously it’s not going to be easy and we know we will go into the game as the underdogs. Despite that, we still have a chance. With our fans behind us, we will give everything we’ve got.”

Nastasic has continued to follow Man City’s progress since his departure. “For me they have continually improved. The football they play is sometimes incredible. There’s barely a team that is as good as them,” said Nastasic, remembering the recent 6-0 trouncing of Chelsea in the Premier League, where Sergio Agüero scored a hat-trick.

No contact with his former teammates before kick-off

The Argentinean striker is one of four players that Nastasic shared a dressing room with. The other three are Fernandinho, Vincent Kompany and David Silva, although he played with Leroy Sané here at Schalke. “Their squad has changed just like ours has, but there are a number of backroom staff who are still at the club.”

The Serb hasn’t had any contact with his former teammates before the game. “I hope we will have some time to meet up before the game though. At the moment the only important thing is the 90 minutes, which I am fully focused on!”
