Fährmann and Schubert: two goalkeepers with one common goal

Rivals on the pitch, but friends off it: Ralf Fährmann and Markus Schubert are both looking to be Schalke’s No. 1 going into the 2020/21 season. The two goalkeepers are fighting for a spot in the starting line up during preseason.

“Both of us want to play. However, we still treat each other with respect and support each other,” said Fährmann, who returned to Gelsenkirchen following his time on loan at Norwich City and at Brann Bergen. “I was able to pick up plenty of experience last season. It wasn’t all positive. But, I think that even that will be of benefit to me,” said the 31-year-old. “Right now, I’m just happy to be back home.”

Markus Schubert also has a trying season behind him. “I experienced all the highs and lows over the course of a year,” he said about his debut Bundesliga season. However, the former Dresden man has put it firmly behind him. “I analysed the season and drew the right conclusions from it,” he said.

A good feeling within the team

Both goalkeepers describe the cooperation amongst the goalkeepers – which also includes Michael Langer and coach Simon Henzler – as extremely positive. “We help each other improve every day,” said Schubert. Fährmann added, “The feeling within the team is good.”

It remains to be seen who will be between the sticks for the Royal Blues on opening weekend. “At the end of the day, it’s the coach who will decide on who our number one is,” said Schubert.
