The team council made it clear that they wanted to ensure the jobs of the club’s staff, with almost 600 people benefitting from this valuable decision. The board, coaching staff and a number of executive staff members will also make financial contributions.

The fact that the players are so aware of their responsibility and that they made this gesture of solidarity is a great sign of their loyalty.

“Unfortunately, coronavirus is affecting each and every one of us. Especially in times like this, it’s important that we all help and support each other. After Peter Peters, Alexander Jobst and I told the team committee about the threats of the current crisis, the team immediately gave their unanimous support,” said director of sport, Jochen Schneider. “The fact that the players are so aware of their responsibility and that they made this gesture of solidarity is a great sign of their loyalty. Our players have made a clear statement about what this club means to them. The statement could not be clearer: we all stand together for FC Schalke 04, not just in good times, but also in bad times.”

The millions in relief this money frees up makes a valuable contribution to protecting the club’s liquidity and ensuring Schalke 04’s position an employer for so many in the Gelsenkirchen region. Depending on how things develop, the team and the club leadership have already made clear of their willingness to take further steps beyond 30th June 2020.
