Leon Goretzka scores brace in Germany rout

The German national side maintained a perfect record in their World Cup qualifying campaign after comfortably beating Azerbaijan 5-1. Leon Goretzka played a big part in the victory, as he scored two goals in front of the 35,000 fans who made the trip to Kaiserslautern. It was an evening to remember for Germany, as it was their tenth win in as many games.

The first goal was special. After a Joshua Kimmich corner that Azerbaijan failed to deal with, the ball fell to Goretzka in the penalty area with his back to goal. The midfielder, who played for the whole 90 minutes, then tried an audacious back-heeled shot from about six metres out which nestled into the top left corner. It was an absolutely wonderful goal.

His second strike came as a result of some strong build-up play by ex-Schalke man Leroy Sané, who left Goretzka with a mere tap-in to finish the move off. “We’ve shown time and time again that we know how to play against teams who just put eleven men behind the ball,” said Goretzka after the game. “We’ve scored more than two or three goals in every game. It’s great for the spectators, and it’s been a great qualification campaign for us.”

The other goalscorers for Germany were Sandro Wagner (54’), Antonio Rüdiger (64’) and Emre Can (81’), while Azerbaijan’s Ramil Sheydaev was the only visitor to get on the scoresheet (34’). With the win, Germany have set a new World Cup qualification record. Germany’s run of ten wins from ten with a goal difference of +39 is the best in history.
