An S04 home game with Chinese New Year’s wishes

In the past few years, FC Schalke 04 has expanded its presence in China and can now boast a large fan basis there. At the home game against Borussia Mönchengladach last Saturday (2/2) the Royal Blues wished their Chinese fans a Happy New Year, ahead of February 5th.

There were New Year wishes emblazoned on the archway before the game and the mascots wore Chinese elements on their kits. The video screen in the VELTINS-Arena had a New Years graphic on it and the advertising boards displayed New Year’s wishes from Schalke fans in China. Stadium announcer Dirk Oberschulte-Beckmann, club mascot Erwin and three other mascots also wore special New Years scarves.

The Chinese New Year begins on February 5th this year – it is the year of the pig. In China the pig stands for wealth and is a symbol for happy and tolerance.
