Thomas Reis: We’re in a development process

Nine days after the 3-1 win in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, the Royal Blues once again take on Eintracht Braunschweig away from home on Sunday (20/8/23, 13:30 CEST) – this time in the league. The Knappen will be hoping to celebrate yet another win with their fans after the upcoming clash in the Eintracht-Stadion.

“We passed the first test, but the second game lies ahead now. We want to be as successful in this game,” head coach Thomas Reis explains, revealing his motto for Sunday. “We have already seen in the cup game that it isn’t going to be easy. The opposition will once again defend with everything they’ve got,” the Schalke coach adds.

Reis expects a similar game to the cup clash. “Braunschweig will try to gain the edge over us in individual duels. We have to adjust to that,” he says, having analysed the first game and prepared his team for the challenge ahead.

Ouwejan to return to the starting XI

Thomas Ouwejan will make his comeback against Eintracht. The Dutchman was missing in the cup game due to calf problems. The left-back is set to start the game, Reis revealed. Henning Matriciani, who had replaced Ouwejan, could be needed on the right-hand side as there are question marks surrounding Cedric Brunner’s availability. The Swiss had already received a blow to the instep in the home game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. We have to wait and see how the next few days play out.

Alongside Matriciani, Niklas Tauer would also be a candidate for the right-back slot. Ralf Fährmann could return to the squad in Braunschweig, however Blendi Idrizi will miss out.

Praise for Lasme

It’s also possible that Bryan Lasme starts the game. “Bryan has been showing that he is in good shape. He has made an impression as a substitute and is someone who could force his way into the starting XI”, says Reis about the winger, who was introduced after an hour in each of the first three competitive games.

The Royal Blues’ clear goal is to claim all three points in Braunschweig. Reis is aware that his team still has room for improvement in possession of the ball. “We’re in a development process”, says the head coach. Reis, for whom results are currently the priority, adds that Paul Seguin’s goal to put S04 2-1 up demonstrated the team’s ability to play good football. “When we have developed further, we will play attractive football. At the moment, it’s all about playing effective football that brings results.”
