Karel Geraerts: We are flexible – which is just what we want to be
Competitive football is back! After six weeks of pre-season, including the training camp in Mittersill and a number of friendlies, FC Schalke 04 host Eintracht Braunschweig on matchday 1 of the new season at the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday night (3/8) at 20:30 CEST. Karel Geraerts is looking forward to the start of the 2024/25 campaign: “I’m excited about the atmosphere at the ground. We feel ready to put in a good performance,” said the head coach.
The 42-year-old explained that the first few games of a new season are always special and important for every team. “If you start well, you can really build on that in the following weeks,” he stated. The Belgian knows that Braunschweig will also be looking for a positive start too. Together with his coaching team, he has analysed the opponents and knows their strengths and weaknesses. “However, we still have to focus on ourselves and play well.”
Lots of new faces at the club
The S04 head coach has had the task of integrating 11 new signings, as well as some academy players, into his squad over the past few months. As well as plenty of new faces, there have been a number of departures too. “Pre-season has been really intense,” reported Geraerts. “There have been a number of changes to our squad, but also to our backroom staff. We’ve expended a lot of energy trying to grow closer together as a team. Every day I feel like we’re on the right track.”
We’ve expended a lot of energy trying to grow closer together as a team.
This process is a way off being complete, according to the coach. “Every single individual is working hard towards success,” he commented, referring to everyone at Schalke, not just the players and coaches.
Heekeren to start in goal
Geraerts wouldn’t reveal his starting XI at the pre-match press conference, though he did discuss one decision he’s made. Justin Heekeren will start in goal against the Lions. “The momentum is on his side,” explained Geraerts. “Justin’s performances during pre-season gave him the edge. I also followed his progress during his loan spell at Maasmechelen, it was really positive. Justin has my full trust.”
Geraerts told the goalkeepers of his decision in a conversation together with goalkeeping coach Stephan Loboué. Ron-Thorben Hoffmann was reportedly naturally disappointed, but the coach said that: “He reacted well. He’s also a good goalkeeper, like all of our keepers are. It was definitely a tough decision.”
Aiming to play better football than last season
The Belgian was also not prepared to reveal the tactical approach for Saturday night. “We can play with a three-man defence or with four at the back – we’ve worked on both formations in pre-season,” he said. “We’re flexible – which is just what we want to be.” Geraerts, who took over from Thomas Reis last autumn, is hoping his side can play better football than they did last season. That being said, he still wants his players to keep the intensity and be as tough in the tackle as they were in the final third of 2023/24.
Bryan Lasme (MCL injury) and Amin Younes (knee pain) are unavailable, as well as Aris Bayindir (knock) and Lino Tempelmann, who has chosen to continue his rehabilitative training in Munich. Ibrahima Cissé, who should return in time for the final training session ahead of the game, will most likely not be in the squad either. The 23-year-old centre-back recently played 90 minutes twice for Mali at the Olympics in France. “I saw Ibra’s games and he impressed me. I was really pleased,” praised Geraerts.
