Darko Churlinov: Sometimes a single moment can decide a game

Darko Churlinov played a direct role in FC Schalke 04’s winning goal against Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday (17/02). Just before the hour mark, Churlinov’s foot was kicked by an opposing defender in the penalty area, and referee Deniz Aytekin showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot. “It was a clear-cut thing,” explains the winter signing.

With a wink, the attacker says he would have liked to have put the penalty in the back of the net himself. “But it’s all good regardless. The most important thing is that we scored a goal more than our opponents.”

The North Macedonia international is well aware that the 1-0 victory over Wiesbaden, who were promoted via the 3. Liga play-offs last season, was far from pretty. “The three points were the main thing. The result’s what counts at the end of the day,” says Churlinov. “But we know that we have to play better going forward. We’re working on that, and I’m sure we’ll get there in the coming weeks. The coach is a good leader and sets us up well.”

We know that we have to play better going forward. We’re working on that.

After a crucial victory over Wehen, the Royal Blues will head into this week with the wind in their sails. On Saturday, Schalke will travel to Saxony-Anhalt to face 1. FC Magdeburg – it’s a club Churlinov knows well, having played for the side’s U17s. The winger will be hoping to help his current team to three more points against his former club.

After just over four weeks in Gelsenkirchen, Churlinov says: “I feel better every day – I’m getting into more and more of a rhythm.” Churlinov has one Schalke goal to his name so far, and will be hoping for more. “I want to help the team. Sometimes a single moment can decide a game,” something that Saturday’s penalty incident is testament to.
