Darko Churlinov: The missed chance motivated me even more

Darko Churlinov made it 2-0 against SC Paderborn in the 74th minute, having missed a great chance to score 14 minutes earlier. The winger had the goal at his mercy at the back post, but only hit the woodwork. Schalke’s number 7 didn’t let that get him down, though.

“I should have scored that, there’s no excuses,” said the 21-year-old after the game. “I’m mentally strong. I knew that I had to score the next chance to make up for it and that provided me with more motivation.” Exactly that happened, as the North Macedonian scored Schalke’s next chance in the 74th minute.

After Thomas Ouwejan did well to win possession back (the Dutch wing-back had already assisted Marius Bülter’s opening goal), the ball came to Florian Flick. Churlinov made a run into space and demanded the pass. “I called for it and waved at him right away. Flo’s pass was outstanding. 50% of the goal belongs to him.”

Churlinov was one of the most dangerous Schalke players through the game. Along with Bülter, he took the most shots (4) and had the most touches (72, same as Ouwejan). The most important thing, however, was his second goal of the season. Churlinov was certainly happy with his own performance, even praising himself, saying: “I did a really good job tonight” – he certainly did.
