Dimitrios Grammozis: The lads fought hard and got their reward

After a 2-0 win over SC Paderborn 07 on Friday night (18/2), Dimitrios Grammozis was happy with both the result and his team’s performance. Lukas Kwasniok, his Paderborn counterpart, was also pleased with his side’s display, but understandably not the scoreline. Goalkeeper Martin Fraisl and Danny Latza, back from an operation on his appendix, also spoke to the media after the game.

Dimitrios Grammozis:

We’re happy with the result. The lads fought hard and got their reward. They showed a good reaction, though you could still see the after-effects of the Düsseldorf game a little bit in the opening few minutes. We didn’t play the right balls forward for Simon to hold up. We knew that we’d get our chances from set pieces and we did. Marius’ goal to make it 1-0 broke the deadlock for us.

It was chaotic in the second half. Paderborn had a good chance to equalise, but Martin Fraisl was on hand to keep it out. He played fantastically. Darko Churlinov had had a great chance to make it 2-0 just before that save – he thankfully did that later on. He provided us with a lot of quality down the right. I’m really pleased that he got his reward with a goal. I’d like to praise the whole team, not just him, though.

Lukas Kwasniok:

We’re really disappointed because things went against us at key moments. You can lose at Schalke, but this wasn’t a game we necessarily should have lost. Luck wasn’t on our side today. I’m totally satisfied with our performance, however it wasn’t enough in the end. We had the first chance, we didn’t take it and then gave away a completely needless foul, which led to their first goal. We gave Marius Bülter far too much room for his header and that’s really frustrating for me. We were then chasing shadows a bit until the break. It was chaotic in the second half. We definitely could have equalised, we had the chances to do so. Schalke also had chances though, and made it 2-0 thanks to the quality they possess. The decisive change that Schalke made during the game was putting Ko Itakura in the central position. We didn’t have any space in behind after that.

Martin Fraisl:

Taking all three points against a Paderborn team that’s strong away from home is a great feeling. I’m really pleased that we showed a reaction after the Düsseldorf game. We worked our way into the game having not actually started that well. We improved after making it 1-0 and got even better in the second half.

Danny Latza:

I personally had imagined this season a bit differently. I’ve had a number of setbacks, but now I hope that I’ve come through all that and I can help the team during the closing stages of the season. I was desperate to help us win the game after coming on. I was a bit out of breath at the end having only rejoined training a few days ago. You just have to fight on in situations like that. Recording a win in front of our fans on my comeback is a great feeling.
