Dominick Drexler: Pleased with the win, but we need to cut out the mistakes

After a goalless first half, Schalke’s match against Sandhausen exploded after the break with seven goals. Both head coaches reflected on the Royal Blues’ 5-2 win on Saturday (27/11), while Marius Bülter and Dominick Drexler also spoke to the media.

Dimitrios Grammozis:

We started the game well and had a few good chances to go ahead early on. We said at half time that we need to continue playing as we were, whilst we also needed to remain patient. Our first mistake in the game was then punished clinically. We found a quick response after going behind. Our structure was good today, the lads got their reward for a good performance and scored some nice goals. The fans also supported us brilliantly too – that was really important for the lads. We need to remain focused and patient. We’ve got three tough games coming up.

Alois Schwartz:

Congratulations to Dimitrios Grammozis and FC Schalke 04. They deservedly won today’s game. We didn’t start the match liked I’d hoped we would. Schalke had some good chances in the first 20 minutes and we rode our luck at times. After that, we kept them away from our goal. Us going 1-0 up turned the game on its head. It probably should have given us some safety, but they quickly equalised and then they wrapped the game up inside a few minutes.

Marius Bülter:

We had plenty of chances in the first half, but unfortunately we didn’t take them. The second half then started really badly for us. We kept on getting on the ball and reacted well to going behind. We spoke a lot last week about what’s not gone well in an attacking sense for us – that wasn’t the case today. We got lots of players into their half, created a number of opportunities and then took them in the second half. I’m pleased to have scored twice, that’s always good. I’m especially happy after I missed a good chance in the first half – that really frustrated me.

Dominick Drexler:

I’m really happy that we won this game. The three points are really important for us. We invested a lot into this match and got our reward for that. However, not everything was good. We need to cut out the individual mistakes in our game. We shouldn’t be going behind in matches like these. Thankfully, we found a response quickly to equalise. We knew that we still had time to turn this game around.
