Karel Geraerts: We were more energetic in the second half

The Royal Blues came away from Elversberg with a point on Friday (19/4). Both head coaches and Ron Schallenberg spoke to the media about the clash in Saarland after the game. We’ve gathered their most important quotes below.

Karel Geraerts:

We got off to a good start and played well for the first 15 minutes, but the game changed. Marius Müller had to make a good save and then they had a free kick, which they scored from. We’re obviously not happy with how we defended the set piece. We were a lot more energetic in the second half due in no small part to Keke Topp coming off the bench. 1-1 is a fair result.

Horst Steffen:

It was a back-and-forth match. Schalke had more energy in the second half and we got the feeling that we weren’t defending as well as we had been. That’s why we switched to a five-man backline early on in the second 45. The defending could’ve been better for the equaliser. We still had two good chances, but Schalke kept putting pressure on us. I’m happy with the point.

Ron Schallenberg:

Every point counts in the battle for survival. We aimed to win the second balls and keep the pitch narrow so we would be able to hit them on the break. The fact that we opened the door for the opposition by conceding a goal from a set piece is annoying. Games like that with lots of loose balls and big challenges suit me down to the ground – it’s what I do best. Nobody should be leaving the pitch with their head down. We were behind but came back to get a point. We’re going to give it our all against Düsseldorf next week to try and get three points at the VELTINS-Arena.
