Kees van Wonderen: The boys showed character

On Sunday (30/3), SpVgg Greuther Fürth and S04 played out an entertaining and chaotic 3-3 draw. After the match, head coach Kees van Wonderen and his counterpart, Fürth’s Jan Siewert, spoke about the result. Kenan Karaman and Amin Younes also gave their opinions on the draw.

Kees van Wonderen:

It was a crazy game. We started well, got an early goal, but then conceded half a minute later, because we didn’t deal with a long ball well. In general, defensive instability has been the main issue this season. The way we played at the back today was not acceptable and prevents us from having more ambitious aims. Our communication wasn’t great, we didn’t work together, and we let them create far too many chances. To keep things positive, the boys showed character, the substitutes adapted to the game well and meant that we came away with a point, which we wouldn’t have gotten if Fürth had taken their chances.

Jan Siewert:

Even though it’s hard, we need to consider the performance and the result separately. Certainly, the performance today was impressive, especially the reaction to going behind early on. After that, we played much better and deservedly took the lead, since a lot came together tactically, and we made the game our own. But in this closely fought league, you’ve got to take your chances to kill off a match like this. That’s why it’s a shame and why, to be honest, it’s painful that we only came away with a draw, because we stopped defending as well afterwards – even though we did more than enough on the whole to win this game.

Kenan Karaman:

This game kind of reflects the season as a whole. We started well and scored an early goal but then – as happens so often – conceded an equaliser directly afterwards and didn’t play well for long stretches of the game. Fürth could’ve sealed the deal much earlier, but we came back in the final quarter of an hour, in part thanks to the substitutes, and we’re happy that we came away with a point. Even though we celebrated a lot after the final whistle, it doesn’t feel like a victory, because we actually played quite badly. We were very lucky and need to address our problems as quickly as possible. Performing better is important for us all and the club as a whole.

Amin Younes:

We tried to have a lot of possession, but we were lacking the final ball, especially in the final third. That only came together again in the closing stages. Looking at the season as a whole, it has something to do with confidence. Today, we got off to a good start but ceded our lead far too softly. We’ve got to address that and make sure the 50-50 decisions go our way more often. I’m glad that I could contribute to the draw at the end of the game – that’s what I’m here for and the role I want to play.
