Karel Geraerts: I can see clear progress

After victories over Osnabrück and Rostock, FC Schalke 04 will be aiming for their third win in a row when they welcome Greuther Fürth to the VELTINS-ARENA on Friday (18:30 CET). Alexander Zorniger’s side will be going into the game with the wind in their sails, however, having picked up 16 points from their last six games.

“Fürth are a good team with a lot of talented players and interesting tactics,” said Schalke head coach Karel Geraerts ahead of his side’s final game before the winter break. The Belgian stressed that the most important thing for the Royal Blues is to focus on their own performance. He explained that the team and the coaching staff are in the process of building something together. “I think that the players are starting to understand my philosophy more and more with every passing training session and every passing game. I can see clear progress,” reported Geraerts, who has been in charge of Schalke for two months now.

The 41-year-old has been impressed by his team’s performances in this week’s training sessions and has noticed a lot of positive things. For him, the aim for the home match against Fürth is clear. “We’re playing to win,” said Geraerts, who has been preparing his side for a completely different game compared to the recent matches against Osnabrück and Rostock.

Relishing the challenge against a defensively sound Fürth

As it stands, the S04 coach will be picking from the same pool of players as last time out in the Ostseestadion. Ron Schallenberg, who missed out on Sunday due to injury, will again be unavailable.

Geraerts is particularly confident in his team’s attacking play after scoring nine goals in the last three games, with his side relishing the challenge of facing the league’s second-strongest defence. “The whole team can score goals, not just our strikers. We’ve shown that in the last few games,” says Geraerts.

Paul Seguin: That was a small step

Paul Seguin was clearly relieved after the 4-0 win against VfL Osnabrück (1.12.), especially given that the Schalke midfielder made a crucial contribution with his important goal (48’) to put his side 2-0 up. However, there was a lot more behind the team’s success.
