Paul Seguin: That was a small step

Paul Seguin was clearly relieved after the 4-0 win against VfL Osnabrück (1.12.), especially given that the Schalke midfielder made a crucial contribution with his important goal (48’) to put his side 2-0 up. However, there was a lot more behind the team’s success.

“We played proactive football. That’s the foundation,” the 28-year-old emphasised several times following the game. The numbers from the game back up his analysis. In addition to the result, the Royal Blues also displayed their dominance in terms of shots (14-8), possession (59%) and distance covered (116km – 112km). Alongside their strong attacking performance, S04 also hardly gave any chances away. The proactive approach out of possession worked far better than in the previous games.

Seguin was not only among the scorers, but also covered the most distance of any player on the pitch, running 12 km. The most important of these runs was into free space in the 48th minute, and he finished confidently to make it 2-0 – his first goal in front of a home crowd. “That was obviously really nice, said Seguin after the game. “I hope that it allow us to breathe a bit.” A dominant win, but “that was a small step,” he emphasised and looked forward to the last two games of the year. “We want to keep playing proactive football.”
