Karel Geraerts: The right response after their equaliser
The joy on Karel Geraerts’ face was clear to see after he secured his first win in charge of FC Schalke 04. The Belgian reflected on Saturday’s victory over Hannover 96 at the post-match press conference alongside his opposite number Stefan Leitl. Lino Tempelmann, who made it 2-1 for S04, also spoke to the media after the game, as well as Ralf Fährmann.
Karel Geraerts:
I’m really pleased, we needed this victory. There was a lot of pressure on us before the game. We dealt with this pressure, together with our fans, who supported us brilliantly today. It was a tight game and there weren’t many good chances. We scored our goals at the right moments. The team found the right response after their equaliser, I was really pleased with their reaction. We fought hard, got stuck in and pushed one another. That makes me proud. This win will give us some additional energy for the coming games. The three points will help us to believe in ourselves, as well give us some breathing space too. At the same time though, we know we’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of us. I saw a few things today that still need to be worked on – we’ll do that together.
Stefan Leitl:
Congratulations to FC Schalke 04 and Karel Geraerts on the victory. We’re extremely disappointed because we didn’t manage to perform as well as we have in recent weeks. We didn’t play with enough urgency overall. We spoke about needing to play with more intensity at half time, and we did that better after the break. It wasn’t enough to get any points in the end though.
Lino Tempelmann:
I knew the only option I had when I got the ball from Assan Ouédraogo was to shoot. Scoring in front of the Nordkurve was an unbelievable feeling, plus it was a really important goal too. Their equaliser just before was a setback for us, but we made sure we kept our heads up. The fans supported us brilliantly, so I’m delighted to have got the win for them today. We knew it wouldn’t be an easy game, but I wasn’t nervous beforehand, I was excited. Showing a reaction after the Karlsruhe game was really important. I felt right away that we would win the match. Today’s win is an important step in the right direction. Now, we need to keep on going!
Ralf Fährmann:
We’re really pleased to have secured all three points. We tried to give the fans something back and looked to do what they asked us to, which was to fight. We managed to do that today. We gave our all and our team played with so much passion. We deserved to win the game. Every goal feels good, we haven’t scored many recently, which you could tell based on how loud the goals were celebrated.
