Miron Muslic: For the effort we put in, we deserved all three points
Following the 2-2 draw against Hannover 96 on Sunday (15/3), head coaches Miron Muslic and Christian Titz both spoke to the media at the post-match press conference. Goalkeeper Loris Karius also gave his thoughts after the game.
Miron Muslic:
We deserved more today. We caused Hannover massive problems in the first half and deservedly led 2-0 through two outstanding goals. Then the red card had a massive impact on the game. Anyone who has played football, had a ball played over their head and tried to bring it down on the turn will know that you do not immediately see a potential opponent behind you.
That one decision did not just mean Edin Džeko was sent off, but we also had to take Adil Aouchiche off, thus losing two key attackers. All of our patterns of play were gone, but even so we accepted the situation. The team did an excellent job with ten men and allowed them few chances. We even dealt well with giving away a penalty. We then conceded from the corner that followed, kept them at bay again and still let in an equaliser with the very last kick of the game. For the effort we put in, we deserved all three points. But that is football, games like this happen. We will take the point and move on. We are Schalke and a day like today will not knock us off course that easily.
Christian Titz:
It wasn’t an easy game for us because we were 2-0 down at half time. We knew after the break that it wouldn’t be simple, especially as Schalke defended well. The red card obviously changed the game. We didn’t create many chances, but we never gave up. Once it was 2-1, it was clear we were in for a frantic finish and that anything could still happen. To make it 2-2 with the last kick of the game is of course fortunate, but the lads gave everything.
Loris Karius:
We played so well today that it really felt like there could only be one winner. Then we conceded the equaliser in the last second of the game – it’s a goal really hurts. It will take a day or two to process. Even so, we have to build on this performance. When it was still 11 against 11, we were clearly on top. The red card suddenly changed everything. All in all, we’re incredibly disappointed. The important thing now is to learn from today and be 100% ready for the Darmstadt game next week.
