Matthias Kreutzer: We have to get ourselves out of this situation together

Interim coach Matthias Kreutzer and Hertha boss Pál Dárdai reflected on S04’s defeat to the Berliners on Sunday (8/10) at the post-match press conference. Marcin Kaminski and Sebastian Polter also gave their thoughts on the game.

Matthias Kreutzer:

It was a disappointing afternoon for us. I don’t believe that Hertha really deserved to lead at the break. We had a great chance to go 1-0 up and those are the kind of moments we need to go our way – we need a bit of luck on our side right now. Our defending wasn’t good enough for their first goal. We could have stopped the cross, then nobody attacked the ball properly and suddenly it was in the back of the net. We wasted too many opportunities after their second goal. The game would perhaps have gone differently had we got one back earlier on. Ultimately though, we have picked up no points today. We have to work hard to get ourselves out of this situation. We have to work together.

Pál Dárdai:

These are three important points for us from a tricky game. Schalke were well-organised and the better team in the first 15 minutes. They could easily have taken the lead during that period. We managed to settle things down after that and were better on the ball. Our goal just before the break really settled us. We wanted to get a second one quickly after the restart and did just that. Despite that, it was still nervy at the end. We defended well and our goalkeeper Tjark Ernst had a fantastic day. I believe we deserved the win and today was an important further step in the right direction for us.

Marcin Kaminski:

We started the game well and had it under control. That was okay. Then came the throw-in and somehow Hertha turned that into a goal. That was a bitter blow. Now the most important thing is to work out the reasons for this performance. We have to get back to basics and keep a clean sheet again. We haven’t yet done that very often this season. We have the attacking quality to score goals. It also shouldn’t be the case that the opponent scores from so few chances. We’ll have to work on that.

Sebastian Polter:

Whether unlucky or not, in the end it’s a defeat. We can’t be and shouldn’t be satisfied with the result. It wasn’t all bad, but equally we can’t sugarcoat the game. We have to start picking up points and winning. Everyone knows that we have to work hard as a group so that we can celebrate some good results again. Because of the international break, we now have 14 days before the next competitive game to cut out our mistakes.
