Tobias Mohr: Carry this attitude into our final games of the season

After 10-man Schalke battled hard to draw 2-2 against Hamburger SV on Saturday night (19/4), head coach Kees van Wonderen and Tobias Mohr gave their thoughts on the game, as well as HSV boss Merlin Polzin.

Kees van Wonderen:

What I saw from every single player after the red card was simply incredible. Everybody fought hard until the final whistle – the mentality was totally different to last week. We should always play with this desire and attitude. Coming from behind after playing over 98 minutes with a man down against a team as strong as HSV and then even having a chance to go 3-2 up deserves so much respect. The whole team deserves a lot of credit, in particular Justin Heekeren, who played really well. We will now celebrate Easter and then turn our focus to the next game against Kaiserslautern.

Merlin Polzin:

The early red card massively changed the game and affected our pre-match analysis and plans. We couldn’t stop Schalke from scoring early on, but then took control of the game and were right on top after our two goals. We made a few changes at half time, we didn’t want to take any risks due to the yellow cards we had received. We controlled the game even more after the break and had more promising attacks. We failed to get a third goal and we only have ourselves to blame for that. The stadium here at Schalke can get so loud and was almost single-handedly responsible for them making it 2-2. The result is obviously disappointing given the run of play but we can learn lessons from tonight. We will stick together as a team and a club.

Tobias Mohr:

I’m pleased that I was able to play well. I always try my hardest. The most important thing is to not get stuck in a run of bad form, but to just keep on believing in yourself and to keep on working hard – that’s my mentality. Sometimes you play the opponents too much and that can have a negative impact – there’s not always a rational explanation for some things in football. We knew we had to show a positive reaction and we did that tonight. We now need to carry this attitude into our final games of the season and end it on a positive note.
