Thomas Reis: We didn’t do everything well after their red cards

Saturday’s 3-0 home win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern wasn’t a walk in the park despite the away team being shown two red cards. Head coach Thomas Reis reflected on the game alongside his opposite number Dirk Schuster. Goalscorer Simon Terodde and goalkeeper Marius Müller also spoke to the media.

Thomas Reis:

We are pleased to have taken all three points and that we kept a clean sheet. However, we didn’t do everything well once we had the extra man/men and we know that. The game calmed down a little after our opening goal and the first red card. We need to be better when we win the ball back, something we particularly struggled with after the second red card. Kaiserslautern did do well though, they defended valiantly. Playing in this stadium was definitely a new feeling for our new players tonight. The atmosphere is something special. We will try to learn a few things from this game, but ultimately the most important thing is that we won.

Dirk Schuster:

We are frustrated and disappointed so soon after the final whistle. We played well in the first half and caused them problems. We were solid at the back and defended well. We tried to continue playing nice football after going 1-0 down, but Andreas Luthe’s red card meant we had to change things up at the break. We did that, but then Boris Tomiak saw red too. We still had chances despite the two red cards. We never gave up with nine men and still managed to cause them some issues. Losing 3-0 feels pretty brutal in the end. I still believe that we gave a good account of ourselves and we can take the positives from tonight.

Simon Terodde:

We went 1-0 up at the right time. It was a great assist from Thomas Ouwejan. Lautern defended for their lives after the two red cards and we struggled to find gaps – we should have done better in that regard. FCK even had one or two good chances despite our numerical advantage, but Marius Müller saved us. The three points are ultimately all that matter and we’re on the board now after our opening day defeat. I would have taken a 3-0 win before the game, so I’m going home happy, even if I know we could have been better.

Marius Müller:

The atmosphere was incredible, I had goosebumps in the warm-up. The fact that our opponents were the club I grew up at made it even more special. The game itself was like any other for me, even if it was my first match ever against Kaiserslautern. I gave my best for the whole 90 minutes and I’m pleased we got the win. I was delighted with the three points and the chance to see some old faces at FCK after the final whistle.
