Kenan Karaman: It was a massive weight off my shoulders when I scored

“It was a goose-bumps moment,” said Kenan Karaman, describing the moments following his ultimately decisive strike in FC Schalke 04’s game against Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday (3.2.). Derry John Murkin set the attacking midfielder away with a lovely pass from the half-way line. Karaman then carried the ball into the box, got the better of his opposite man Ermin Bicakic and put his side 1-0 up with a precise low finish into the bottom right corner.

“It was a massive weight off my shoulders when I scored,” explained the attacking player, who spoke about an altogether deserved win against Braunschweig, which needs to be built upon. Karaman also praised his teammates, who have withstood the pressure that had built up following the two losses at the start of the second half of the season and the club’s unsatisfactory position in the table. This pressure was lifted somewhat following the full-time whistle, with Karaman speaking of “pure relief”.

Chanting for the goalscorer

The 29-year-old was serenaded with chants from the Nordkurve following the full-time whistle. Karaman said that this gave him “an amazing feeling”. He went on to thank all the fans “who come to every home game and support us – even though the current situation isn’t easy. It was great to be able to give something back today.”

In order to get a positive result from the upcoming away game in Kiel on Sunday (11.2.), the team needs to be courageous and play with self-confidence once again as “we have quality – we just need to show it.”
