Thomas Reis: Didn’t defend their counter-attacks well enough

FC Schalke 04 were beaten 2-0 at home by Holstein Kiel on Friday night (25/8). Head coaches Thomas Reis and Marcel Rapp gave their thoughts on the game at the post-match press conference, while S04 captain Simon Terodde also discussed the defeat.

Thomas Reis:

We wanted to put pressure on our opponents, but we weren’t good enough when defending their counter-attacks and weren’t good enough up front either. We were too slow, held onto the ball for too long and only played the pass once Kiel had their shape. It was incredibly tough for us after the red card – Kiel defended really well and were compact, so they deserved to win. We didn’t live up to expectations today. We have to put in a much better performance against Wehen Wiesbaden next Saturday, that’s a fact.

Marcel Rapp:

I’m happy and proud of my team after such a great performance. We controlled the game nicely and found space in behind their defence. The basis for our success was a solid defence. We remained disciplined once we had a man advantage, saw lots of the ball and put together some nice attacks too.

Simon Terodde:

It was a deserved defeat, everybody could see that. Kiel hit the post three times and had two one-on-one chances against our goalkeeper. We ourselves only created a few opportunities and therefore deserved to lose 2-0. Kiel did really well with their man advantage. The support from the fans was there throughout the 90 minutes, but we weren’t able to get them excited by scoring or creating more dangerous moments.
