Karel Geraerts: It’s going to be an intense affair
FC Schalke 04 are finally back at home. After four weeks on the road, the Royal Blues will host 1. FC Köln at the VELTINS-Arena on Sunday (13:30 CEST).
It’s the first time that the clash between two of Germany’s most historic clubs will be played in the second tier, with the sides being in the Bundesliga for the previous 90 meetings. As a result, head coach Karel Geraerts is fully aware of how important this match is: “It’s going to be an intense affair, but the team looked very focused and physically strong in training this week. The boys are well-prepared mentally for the game on Sunday.”
It’s been a long few weeks. We’re really looking forward to it, and I’m sure the fans are, too.
The Belgian was very clear about the upcoming opposition’s reputation: “Köln are aiming to go straight back up to the Bundesliga again. That’s why they’re the favourites.” The 42-year-old was keen to mention the special cicumstances on Sunday, however: “After three away games in a row, we’re finally back at home. It’s been a long few weeks. We’re really looking forward to it, and I’m sure the fans are, too.”
So far, the Royal Blues have picked up four points this season thanks to a 5-1 demolition of Eintracht Braunschweig and last week’s 2-2 draw against 1. FC Magdeburg. The Royal Blues also fell to a 3-1 defeat away in Nuremberg on matchday 2. Köln sit eighth in the table, but have the same number of points as Schalke. However, Geraerts expressed that it’s too early to jump to any conclusions after the game on Sunday, no matter what happens. “Results are very important, but I’m more interested in the performance, because we’re in the middle of a process that is going to take longer than a month to complete,” explained S04’s head coach. “That being said, each and every win helps us to develop.”
Schallenberg available again
Ron Schallenberg will be able to help the side out on Friday, as the midfielder has served his suspension following his red card against Nürnberg. “He’s a very important player for me and the team. He has a lot of experience,” stated Geraerts. The Belgian did not reveal whether the Royal Blues’ number 6 will play as a centre-back or in defensive midfield in Friday’s press conference. He also kept his cards close to his chest when asked whether Paul Seguin and Adrian Gantenbein are fit again following their recent injuries: “I’m optimistic, but we’re going to wait until after training tomorrow to make any decisions.”
Emil Højlund and Tomas Kalas will definitely not be involved in the clash against the Billy Goats. The 19-year-old striker continues to struggle with groin problems and will keep working individually, while the Czech defender is expected to return to training the week after next after sustaining an injury to his patellar tendon. “We’ll have to see how his knee is,” reported Geraerts.
