Kees van Wonderen: Learn from this experience and continue on the path we're on
Following FC Schalke 04's 1-0 defeat away at 1. FC Köln on Sunday (9/2), schalke04.de spoke to head coach Kees van Wonderen, as well as Mehmet Can Aydin and Kenan Karaman about the result. Read on for all the key quotes.

Kees van Wonderen:
There were positive aspects but also things that we should have done better. We created several chances for ourselves, but it could have been more. We also have to acknowledge that Köln’s defence didn’t give up many chances. We were close to scoring and gave it everything, but in the end, it just wasn’t enough. The important thing is that we manage to learn from this experience and that we continue on the path we’re on. We’ve managed to become more organised in defence and while also continuing to develop in attack. However, we’ve lost two games in a row, which is obviously quite frustrating. Mistakes can happen and are part of the growth process, but I also want my players to be confident on the pitch. We tried everything we could to score the equaliser. The key thing is that we present a united front as a team, and success will then follow.
Gerhard Struber:
It was a tough game. For us, it was particularly important to let go of any excess emotions this week. The lads have once again proven that they are prepared to give it everything they have. It doesn’t aways look pretty, but full credit to my players for what they’ve achieved.
Mehmet Can Aydin:
The goal we conceded was my fault. I didn’t notice that there was a player behind me and thought I’d be able to chest the ball down for Justin. But, Maina was alert enough to intercept it and we then conceded. Both teams defended well today, but we still managed to create several chances. I want to learn from this experience and be ready to go again next week. We’ll stay positive and remain focused on what’s still to come.
Kenan Karaman:
It was a tough cross to control during the chance we had late on in the game. I tried my best to get on the end of it. I was hoping that Tomas Kalas was going to head it on target. I think that Köln were beatable today. In the end, we made one mistake and were punished for it immediately by our opponents, which is exactly why they’re at the top of the table and we’re at the other end. We had a lot of possession during the first half and did well to get the ball into space, but we were lacking the ability to finish our chances. We should have been willing to take more risks in order to create more chances. We know what the current state of play is in the standings and want to continue picking up points in order to increase the gap between us and the bottom teams.
