Marius Bülter: We shouldn’t have lost that game

After Hamburger SV defeated FC Schalke 04 to kick off the 2021/22 season on Friday (23/7), both coaches spoke to the media in the post-match press conference. Marius Bülter and Blendi Idrizi also gave their thoughts on the 3-1 loss.

Dimitrios Grammozis:

It’s really disappointing to start with a defeat. We were right in the game against a good team in the first half. We deservedly had the lead and could even have gone 2-0 up through Marius Bülter. Michael Langer’s penalty save gave us an additional boost too just before that. After conceding just after the break, Thomas Ouwejan had a good chance to make it 2-1. The difference tonight was that they scored at the right times, and we didn’t. The chances we had should have been enough for at least a point. I would like to thank the fans for their superb support across the 90 minutes this evening. We will now analyse the match and then start preparing for Kiel.

Tim Walter:

Finally playing in front of fans again was a great feeling. The atmosphere was incredible. I think you could see that a bit from the way my players were at the start. Going 1-0 down was a wake-up call for us. We missed the penalty, but grew into the game more after the break and worked even harder. As a result, we got three goals and the three points. We obviously had a bit of luck on our side at times, and Schalke were especially dangerous from set pieces on several occasions.

Marius Bülter:

We shouldn’t have lost this game. Both sides had chances. They unfortunately took theirs, and we didn’t. After a good first 15 minutes, Hamburg had more of the ball. Despite that, they barely had any chances in the first half aside from the penalty, which Michael Langer brilliantly saved. They were clinical after the break, particularly towards the end. We had a good chance to go ahead again at 1-1 and could have scored immediately after going behind too.

Blendi Idrizi:

We’re really disappointed that we couldn’t get the win for our fans and get the reward for our performance. It’s hard to find the right words so soon after the final whistle. At the end of the day, HSV scored the goals and we didn’t, which was decisive. It’s important now that we continue to work hard and don’t let this set us back in any way.
