Mike Büskens: We’ll still be talking about this night in two decades

The VELTINS-Arena totally erupted after Schalke beat St. Pauli 3-2 on Saturday evening (7/5). It was a particularly emotional night for club legend Mike Büskens, who took over as interim coach during a tough situation a few weeks ago. He spoke after the game alongside his opposite number. Vice-captain Victor Pálsson and Darko Churlinov also spoke to the media.

Mike Büskens:

I would like to thank all the people who have contributed along the way. It’s been an incredible journey. The team spirit that we’ve developed is sensational. We’ll still be speaking about this night in two decades. We could have made it 1-0 after 15 seconds. We had great chances, St. Pauli then scored with their first shot. We were then 2-0 down with just more than 15 minutes played. The team tried all they could, but kept missing their opportunities. I told them at half time that that was the best first half I’d seen from them. We needed to stay calm because going 3-0 down would probably have killed it off. We wanted to make sure we had enough defenders back to stop their counter-attacks and we tried to keep our structure, whilst attacking with bravery at the other end. We knew that the stadium would be rocking if we got a goal. The support was out of this world and the team’s character is fantastic. Our dream was to go up, but you have to work hard to achieve dreams and the lads have done just that. I’m pleased for the whole city and the club – we’ve suffered a lot over the last few years.

Timo Schultz:

I would like to congratulate Schalke 04 on promotion to the Bundesliga. You’ve done it, well done. We have to admit today that they had more quality. We could sense that in the first half, even though we were 2-0 up at half time. We couldn’t deal with their pressure in the end. Ultimately, it wasn’t a normal week for us.

Victor Pálsson:

Our team is simply amazing! Our team spirit is fantastic and we’ve got a great mentality, which we showed once again today. I’m struggling to find the words to describe what I feel right now and what’s just happened. We stuck together all season – after wins but also during the bad times. Seeing the scenes here right now is the best possible reward you can get. I’m just so happy. I’ll remember this day for the rest of my life!

Darko Churlinov:

You don’t experience days like this very often in your life. I joined FC Schalke 04 last summer with one big aim and that was to win promotion! I’ve achieved this together with my teammates. I didn’t start panicking when we were 2-0 down, I knew we’d still win this game. We played well in the first half, but didn’t take our chances. The place just exploded when Rodri smashed it in to make it 3-2. Thank you to the fans for their unbelievable support once again.
