Youri Mulder: Everyone worked hard to earn this win
In his new role as interim director of professional football, Youri Mulder is responsible for supporting the coaches, backroom staff and players in their ongoing work. Following Schalke's 2-0 win against SSV Jahn Regensburg on Sunday (10/11), Mulder spoke to schalke04.de about various topics. Read on for all the key quotes from the interview.
Youri Mulder on…
…his role as interim director of professional football:
I knew immediately that I wanted to help out. My job is to create the right conditions to allow the coaches and the backroom staff to be able to successfully work with the team. But, the fact that we beat Regensburg wasn’t due to me. The entire group worked hard to earn this win.
…the 2-0 win against Regensburg:
It was key for us to get a positive result, especially in such convincing fashion. There were several reasons for this: the way we played in possession, but also how we acted in defence. We managed to keep a clean sheet for the second straight match. That also helps build confidence, in attack as well. If you, as an attacker, feel like every loss of possession results in a chance for the opponents, then that’s not good. We managed to keep Regensburg from creating any dangerous chances. As a team, we did well. I could say something positive about every player that was on the pitch.

…the week of training ahead of the home game against Regensburg:
The team were extremely focused on the task at hand, which was clear to see over the course of several sessions. Sometimes when this is coupled with pressure, it can end up hurting you. That wasn’t the case for us, which is why I have to give my compliments to the team. We managed to put things into action that we’d set out to do.
…Kees van Wonderen:
Together with his coaching staff, he did well to prepare the team for the game and their opponents. Kees’ speech to the team was very good, both ahead of kick off and at half time. I’m convinced that we are on the right path together.
…the aims in the lead-up to the winter break:
We still have five games left this year, from which we want to take as many points as possible from in order to grow the gap to the bottom. In order to do that, we need to – as cliché as it sounds – take it game by game. We can take a day to enjoy the win against Regensburg, but as soon as training starts again our full focus needs to be on the upcoming away game at Hamburger SV.
