Amin Younes: We’re all massively relieved

A late goal in the 86th minute earned the Royal Blues all three points against Preußen Münster on Friday night (28/2). Following the 1-0 victory on matchday 24, head coaches Kees van Wonderen and Sascha Hildmann analysed the game at the post-match press conference. Goalscorer Pape Meïssa Ba and Amin Younes also gave their thoughts following the final whistle.

Kees van Wonderen:

I think the team with more luck won the game tonight. This win was earned by the fans and it was for them as well. Their support was incredible over the course of the 90 minutes, which is why I’m happy we could get three points for them. It wasn’t easy today after all that’s happened to our squad over the last week. We were without six attackers and that meant we didn’t quite have the patterns of play in our heads as much as we normally would. Nevertheless, the lads we brought on helped us get the win. Pape Meïssa Ba took his goal brilliantly. He applied pressure at the right time, took a touch towards the wing, cut back inside and then picked out the back of the net at the near post. Our goalkeeper also made the difference tonight. We’re pleased to get the points given the situation we currently find ourselves in.

Sascha Hildmann:

It was a really exciting game and one that we should never have lost in my honest opinion. We did really well for large parts of tonight’s match and created a few good chances in the first half. Schalke put us under a lot of pressure in the first 15 minutes of the second half and it was important that we showed some resistance. We fought back and put together some good attacks again after that. We hit the post, the bar and had an overhead kick saved. The fact that their goalkeeper was the best player on the pitch says it all really. We conceded a goal in the final 10 minutes that came from a series of mistakes – it simply shouldn’t have happened. Nonetheless, my team deserve credit for their performance, which would normally be enough to take something from the game.

Amin Younes:

We’re all massively relieved. We knew we really needed all three points tonight, even if wasn’t a great game to watch. I think everyone could see that we’re a great team with real character. The role I play isn’t the most important thing. We’ve got a lot of players out and I’ll play anywhere the team needs me to. I’m really pleased that Loris had such a good debut, though I’m not surprised. I’ve known him for a long time and he’s a fantastic goalkeeper, who hasn’t played at the highest level by chance.

Pape Meïssa Ba:

I wanted to contribute to the team’s success and I was thankfully able to do that tonight. The fact that I only came on as a substitute isn’t a problem at all, the team is always the most important thing and I just want to fulfil the role given to me as best I can. I’ve still not been at Schalke for long and can live with being on the bench. Loris was the Man of the Match for me tonight, he kept a clean sheet and was the reason we didn’t go behind before I scored.
