Karel Geraerts: We need to be more efficient and make the most of chances
Following the 1-1 draw against Hannover 96 last Sunday, FC Schalke 04 will get their next opportunity to pick up some points at home and take an important step forward in the 2. Bundesliga standings when they face off against 1. FC Nürnberg at the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday (13/4). The Royal Blues are coming up against a side who like to have a lot of possession. “Nürnberg play nice passing football. We’ve got to stop them from doing so as a collective,” said S04 head coach Karel Geraerts.
“They’ve also got some extremely skilful players, like Can Uzun, who has scored a lot of goals this season,” continued the 42-year-old. The goal remains clear for S04: a victory at home. “We want to show the same team spirit as we have done over the past few weeks. We also need to be more efficient. If we do both of these things, I’m optimistic about our chances.”
If we show the same level of team spirit as we have done in recent weeks and play with more efficiency, I’m optimistic about our chances.
Schallenberg fit, Soppy back in team training, Ouédraogo still a doubt
Ron Schallenberg and Brandon Soppy have both been sidelined recently, but the duo returned to team training this week. Geraerts reported that Schallenberg has looked good in this week’s sessions, while Soppy is almost back to full fitness. It’s still unclear whether Assan Ouédraogo will be involved on Saturday. S04’s head coach will wait until Friday to decide whether Ouédraogo plays against FCN, as last week’s goalscorer has been training individually this week.
Dominick Drexler will definitely not be in the matchday squad to face Nürnberg. The 33-year-old will train with the U23s until further notice. “The decision I made on Monday was a logical one for me. As a team, we’ve agreed to give it our all over these next few weeks and put our personal feelings to one side,” said the Belgian. Geraerts emphasised that the decision was not solely a result of the milkshake incident after the game on Sunday. “I have my own reasons, but I’ll be keeping them private.”
