Karel Geraerts: We showed how much we wanted to win in the closing stages

Karel Geraerts was delighted to secure his first away win in charge of FC Schalke 04 on Saturday (4/11) in Nürnberg. Together with his opposite number Cristian Fiél, he discussed the victory at the post-match press conference. Lino Tempelmann and Derry John Murkin also gave their thoughts on the 2-1 win.

Karel Geraerts:

This was a really important win for us and the first victory on our travels this season – exactly what we said we wanted before the game! We started well and played good football in the first 15 minutes in particular. Nürnberg got better in the second quarter of an hour of the first half, before we then took charge again and went ahead. Our goal was really nicely worked. It’s important to be creative with the ball, which is something we haven’t always been recently. We weren’t in the game at the start of the second half. Nürnberg were the better side then and quickly got an equaliser. For me, it was important that the lads didn’t let their heads drop after it went 1-1. They simply fought hard and then showed how much they wanted to win the game in the closing stages. I’m therefore happy and proud that they got a late winner. The atmosphere in the stadium was amazing and something I won’t forget for a long time. I would like to wish 1. FC Nürnberg all the best for the rest of the season.

Cristian Fiél:

Congratulations to FC Schalke 04 on the victory! We didn’t start well, lacked intensity in the first half and didn’t get into the parts of the pitch we wanted to. I told the team exactly that at half time. We began the second half really well with our almost immediate equaliser. We had a few more attacks later on, from which we could have scored again. I think we lacked a bit of belief that we could score again in the second half. Their winning goal came from a free-kick from Thomas Ouwejan. His deliveries are extremely dangerous and hard to defend. In my opinion, it was the kind of game that typically ends in a draw, which is why I’m disappointed to have lost it. The important thing now is that we get our heads up quickly and go again next weekend.

Lino Tempelmann:

This was a really special game for me because I got to see a number of familiar faces again today. On top of that, the whole atmosphere surrounding a clash between Schalke and Nürnberg is also incredible. I got goosebumps as soon as I saw the tifo before the game. The friendship between the two clubs is really unique. The game itself was really enjoyable too. Both teams were desperate to win. We had good chances in the first half and could really have landed a few decisive blows. Their equaliser at the start of the second half was a bit of a setback for us, we took a few minutes to settle again after that. I’m pleased that we ultimately managed to win the game. We were really committed, defended well for large parts of the match and kept things pretty tight, before scoring right at the death. Getting a win away from home now after beating Hannover at home last time out in the league is a great feeling. We now need to build on these results against Elversberg. The coach is doing a good job – he gives us a clear plan to follow. We want to keep on improving with each week and play better football too.

Derry John Murkin:

We managed to put our game plan into practice for most of the game. Karel Geraerts set us up well. I’m happy that I could help the team secure its first away win of the season. I saw even before our first goal that Nürnberg could have issues with a long ball like the one I found Kenan Karaman with. That’s then how we opened them up to score. Our back-three worked well. We speak a lot with one another and are improving with each game.
