Thomas Ouwejan: Unlucky several times in front of goal, goals conceded too easily

On two occasions he was just centimetres from scoring on Saturday – Thomas Ouwejan, goalscorer in the reverse fixture against Hamburg, thundered a free-kick against the bar in the first half, and the Dutchman saw an impressive volley cannon back off the post after the break.

“We got unlucky a few times,” said the left-footer, referring not just to his efforts against the woodwork. Bryan Lasme also hit the post, and the Royal Blues carved out a number of good chances over the 90 minutes at a sold-out VELTINS-Arena. “We should have rewarded ourselves in the second half,” says Ouwejan. “If we’d managed to score, something could have come from the game – I’m sure of it. Especially here, with our fans behind us.”

But Ouwejan also acknowledges the opposition’s performance. “Hamburg were very efficient,” says the 27-year-old. “They were ice-cold in front of goal. On the other hand, we gave goals away far too easily.”

The full-back explains, though, that the 2-0 defeat will not weigh heavily on the team. “We had big plans and definitely wanted to start off with a win. So the result hurts;” per Ouwejan. “Despite the defeat, though, I have a good feeling about the coming weeks. We’re better equipped than in the first part of the season.” The next chance for points will come as early as this Friday (January 26th) at 18:30 CET. Schalke 04’s 19th league fixture of the season will see them visit 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
