Miron Muslic: This game sums up our season

The Royal Blues celebrated coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 on Sunday (26/4), a strong showing in their top-of-the-table clash against SC Paderborn 07. After the final whistle, both head coaches, Mertcan Ayhan, and Loris Karius spoke about the game

Miron Muslic celebrates with the Schalke fans after the game.

Miron Muslic

It was an incredible day for us – this game sums up our season. We went 2-0 down, just as we’ve had to fight resistance and overcome obstacles all year. Paderborn are a quality team and punished us early on. As a result, it was even more important that we didn’t lose our heads and stayed in the game, because we also have the talent you need in situations like this. Getting one back was incredibly important, and we couldn’t have asked for a better time to score the second goal. After the interval, both teams were looking to secure the win, though we barely gave them a sniff and ultimately reaped our reward by scoring the winner. Now, we want to take the next crucial step in the home game against Düsseldorf.

Ralf Kettemann

For 37 minutes, we felt good, and it didn’t seem as though they were going to score. But that’s the thing about quality teams – they only need a hint of an opportunity to score. Schalke fought back well, and we lacked the impetus you need to have going forward. Still, we can’t afford to concede like that at the end of the game. We’re disappointed with the result, but we also have to dust ourselves off. I saw a lot of young players who have the necessary courage and who stood their ground. Today, we’re disappointed but, tomorrow, it’s business as usual.

Mertcan Ayhan

The feeling after the game is indescribable. One of our most obvious qualities is that we never give up, no matter what the scoreline is. We always want to play to our strengths – that didn’t work initially, but then we started to grow into the game. Everyone knows what their role is, fights for their teammates and knows what the plan is. The comeback today clearly shows what we can do. It’s also down to the coach finding the right thing to say. During the interval, he clearly showed us what was going wrong, but also where we could create opportunities. In the second half, we had the chance to show him that we understood what he was saying. Getting to fully experience this period of time, especially after growing up in Gelsenkirchen and as a Schalke fan, is amazing.

Loris Karius

You could see again today that we keep grinding even when things aren’t going our way. Nobody falters, nobody underestimates their opposite number, and the coach always has a suitable plan. Now, we want to win again next week, fully aware that the opposition will be looking to spoil the party. But we’re focussing on the task at hand and nothing else – the rest will work itself after that.
