Thomas Reis: Minimise errors, be braver playing forward

It was a frustrating end to the game on Saturday evening (23/9), with FC Schalke 04 falling to a 3-1 defeat away at FC St. Pauli. Thomas Reis:

At the end of the day, it’s not an underserved win for St. Pauli, but we also had periods in the first half where we played well and created chances. The penalty was unlucky. You have to say though, that we were begging for it a bit with our passive behaviour before then. After that, we defended actively and their goal to make it 2-1 after the break came out of nowhere. At the end of the game, it was very, very disappointing because we had the ball for our own throw-in and from that we conceded to make it 3-1. But if we had come back after conceding the second goal, the game could have changed completely, in the first half I also thought we had as many chances as they did. After that, St. Pauli put us under some pressure and then it becomes difficult at the end when you’re a goal behind. We will take the lessons from this that we need to minimise errors and be braver playing forward.

Fabian Hürzeler:

We started the game well, had a lot of possession and created a lot of chances. Until the goal we conceded, we were very active but after that unfortunately we lost our rhythm. We became too hectic, didn’t have the correct positioning anymore and it wasn’t a good game anymore. We knew that Schalke would come out of the dressing room at half time with different body language, so the goal we scored to go back ahead came at exactly the right time. After that, we had control of the game but also had a couple of slices of luck when we defended poorly but were able to avoid conceding. In the end, we reacted well again – if we had allowed ourselves to be dragged into a battle of will with Schalke, then it would have been dangerous. Last of all, I am pleased that we got our just rewards and I’m pleased with the performance if you look past the period where Schalke put us under pressure.

Lino Tempelmann:

I wasn’t really aware of the incident for the penalty during the same. The referee said that it was an unnatural position. I only noticed that the ball lightly touched me. It is obviously unlucky that it hit my arm. After the break, we had our chances to come away with a draw, but if you don’t take these and then concede a third goal in the closing stages, it obviously looks very different.
