Peter Remmert: Working towards getting more minutes with the first team
In last Wednesday’s friendly against FC Groningen, Peter Remmert won a penalty after smartly using his body, just as he did in the move that resulted in Pape Meïssa Ba’s winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Preußen Münster a few weeks prior on his professional debut. “It was an incredible feeling,” said the 19-year-old as he reflected on the atmosphere at the VELTINS-Arena, hoping it’s something he gets to experience a lot more in the future.

With just a few minutes to go in the home game against the promoted side from Münster, it looked like the match was going to end goalless. However, a Preußen throw-in proved to be fatal for the visitors. Anton Donkor played a long ball forward towards debutant Peter Remmert. The pass wasn’t perfectly directed to the youngster, but he still did his best to compete for the ball with defender Niko Koulis and ultimately prevented him from getting a clean header on the ball. Koulis’ attempted clearance only ended up falling to Pape Meïssa Ba, who drove forward with the ball, cut inside past Mikkel Kirkeskov and slotted the ball home to send 60,000 Royal Blues wild.
Remmert is more than happy to talk about that moment once again. “It was really special, also because of my contribution to the goal.” Eight days later, the youngster’s second appearance for the first team came at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. “It’s a really, really special stadium in Germany and there was a huge crowd,” he said.
The club made it clear to me that I would get the opportunity to get used to adult football through minutes with the U23s and then I would slowly be able to establish myself in the first team.
The striker’s recent experiences are the result of a plan made when he joined the Royal Blues from VfL Osnabrück’s academy last summer: “The club made it clear to me that I would get the opportunity to get used to adult football through minutes with the U23s and then I would slowly be able to establish myself in the first team.”
Friendlies during international breaks, such as the one against FC Groningen last week, are also beneficial for the attacker. “They are always a chance for me to impress and to show what I’m capable of,” stated Remmert, who had a real impact on the game against the Dutch side in the 18th minute in particular. He ran past defender Marvin Peersman following a pass by Aris Bayindir and was able to win a penalty after being fouled. Aymen Barkok took the subsequent spot-kick and secured a 1-0 win in the end.
Feedback from the coaching team really important
Schalke’s number 39 was a constant thorn in Groningen’s defence throughout the friendly. “I just want to keep working hard on my game and continue to show the coach that I’m an option.” Remmert is hoping his appearances against Münster and Hertha aren’t his last in the 2. Bundesliga this season. “Getting a few more minutes with the first team is what I’m working towards.”
Until then, the Vechta native will continue to listen to all the advice given to him from the coaching team, and from Sidney Sam in particular, who he speaks a lot with. “I get a lot of good feedback but also about a lot of things that I need to improve on. That’s normal for a young player looking to get better.”
