Ron Schallenberg: The first training session was a real highlight

New signing Ron Schallenberg trained with his new club for the first time on Monday (26/6) at the Parkstadion in front of around 2,400 supporters. The midfielder, who was captain of his previous side SC Paderborn 07, was given a huge round of applause as he took the field. The 24-year-old spoke to the media afterwards about his first impressions, his reasons for joining Schalke, his new teammates and his aims for the season. schalke04.de has summarised his quotes.

Ron Schallenberg on…

…his first impressions:
Overall I’m really satisfied. The last few days have been extremely busy for me. Everything is a bit bigger here at Schalke. The team have really welcomed me so far. We started pre-season with a fairly short session and I’m excited for more.

…his decision to join Schalke:
The fact that so many people came to watch training just once again shows what a special club FC Schalke 04 is. I didn’t need anything to back up my decision to come here, but a first training session like this is obviously a real highlight. The club’s ideas and plans of how they want to build for the future simply convinced me. The size of the club also played a big role too. Schalke, with around 170,000 members, are one of the biggest clubs in the world, not just in Germany. Who wouldn’t want to play for these fans?

…his new teammates:
I know Marvin Pieringer after playing together last season in Paderborn, but I also know most the other lads too. I’m excited to see how it will be to play alongside Simon Terodde, he’s a key figure here at the club. I actually sit next to him in the dressing room and he’s a really nice guy. My first impression of the whole team and the backroom staff has been really positive.

…the coach’s aim of promotion:
I will gladly go along with that. A club like Schalke 04 should always have this ambition when in the second division. However, no side has ever gone up just because they wanted to, you have to perform well too. I now have some experience of the 2. Bundesliga and I know that you have to consistently pick up points, week in, week out, and you can barely afford to have a bad run of form. This is what we have to demand from ourselves.

…his personal targets:
As a player you always want to settle into the team well, find a place in the starting XI and play as many minutes as possible. That’s obviously the aim for everyone else too, so I’m no different from the rest of the team in that regard. I want to play as much as I can and perform well every week.
