Karel Geraerts: If we don't work as a unit, things will start to get tricky
After a disappointing outing in Magdeburg, the Royal Blues will be aiming to put in a much better performance when they face off against FC St. Pauli on Friday (1/3, 18:30 CET). Head coach Karel Geraerts seemed positive as he told journalists about the group discussions that took place at the start of the week.
“The boys needed to talk to each other about all the issues they addressed,” explained Geraerts, who also took part in the first part of the meeting alongside sporting director Marc Wilmots. “It was important that Marc and I had our say. Afterwards, we got the feeling that we should leave and let the players speak to each other,” added the Belgian. “The most important thing was letting the players make their feelings clear to one another. Now, we’re in a position to start finding solutions,” continued the 42-year-old, who’s well aware that the game against FC St. Pauli on Friday is a crucial opportunity for his side to show a reaction.
Geraerts focused on the group, as he noted that every single player will need to play their part if they want to turn things around, including those who will not be a part of the matchday squad on Friday. “At the moment, I need the whole team,” underlined S04’s head coach. “Whether you’re playing or not, I want you to use all of your energy to help the team out. If we don’t work as a unit, things will start to get tricky.” Geraerts noted that he’s feeling full of energy, which he wants to use to galvanise his players. “Then, the players have got to pass the energy along to the fans in the stadium.”

Geraerts explained that he’s looking forward to the match against the league leaders despite the tough situation that the club finds itself in at the moment. The Belgian acknowledged the pressure on his side, but explained that FCSP are “the best opponent that we can come up against, since it’s the biggest challenge that we can face as a collective.” In Geraerts’ opinion, St. Pauli are the best team in the second tier. He noted that they’re a complete side with all the right instincts.
Geraerts has almost a full complement of players to choose from ahead of Friday’s game. Only Leo Greiml and Assan Ouédraogo will be unavailable, while Tobias Mohr missed Wednesday’s training session due to illness.
