Darko Churlinov: This support from the fans isn’t a given

After five straight wins, interim head coach Mike Büskens suffered his first defeat in charge on Saturday (23/4). His Bremen counterpart, Ole Werner, was naturally delighted with the result at the post-match press conference. Darko Churlinov and Victor Pálsson also gave their thoughts on the 4-1 defeat.

Die Mannschaft mit dem Fans nach dem 1:4 gegen Bremen

Mike Büskens:

First of all, I’d like to congratulate Werder Bremen. They were the deserved winners today. We started alright, but fell asleep from two set pieces. We were too slow to react on both of them. In between those goals, we had a good chance through Simon Terodde. An equaliser then would have definitely helped us. Going 3-0 down at the start of the second half made it really tough – Bremen are a side with a lot of quality. Despite the deficit we never gave up. We have to accept this defeat. We weren’t getting carried away after our wins in recent weeks. We will analyse this game clearly. We’re back in action in Sandhausen on Friday.

Ole Werner:

It was a really, really good performance by my team, and the result was obviously fantastic too. We were really clinical with our first few chances. We were, however, slightly fortunate that Simon Terodde didn’t take his chance when it was still 1-0, that was a good opportunity for an equaliser. Overall, it was a deserved win. My team found the right answers to our absentees and got the reward for a great performance.

Darko Churlinov:

We’re all really disappointed because we had a chance to win against a direct rival. Nonetheless, we’ll keep our heads up. We’ve got a chance to do better against Sandhausen next time out. We’ve got a shorter week, which we’ll use to prepare for that game as best we can. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the fans for their unbelievable support. Having such loud support when you’re 4-0 down and after the game is definitely not a given. This is what Schalke is all about!

Victor Pálsson:

Today wasn’t a good day for us. You have to say that Werder deserved to win the game. They were the better team. It’s important now that we still believe in ourselves. Days like today happen in football, even if they shouldn’t. As a group, we need to look to the future together. We will critically analyse this performance, but quickly turn our focus to the away game in Sandhausen.
