Ahmed Kutucu: The coach gives us the confidence we need

Schalke scored five goals away from home in the Bundesliga for the first time in 20 years on Sunday evening as they battered Paderborn 5-1. Steffen Baumgart, the SCP head coach, admitted the Royal Blues deserved to win. The Knappen’s chance conversion rate still wasn’t perfect though.

David Wagner:

We started the game well, but because we didn’t take our chances, fell 1-0 behind. We carried on creating good opportunities and could have led at half time. It was great to see how the lads carried on playing well and that they never stop believing in themselves. We deservedly won the game in the end. Paderborn have a lot of quality on the break and can really hurt you, but our boys were really up for today’s game and that showed. They were confident and played really good football.

Steffen Baumgart:

Congratulations to S04 on what was a well-earned victory, we have to recognise that. We made too many mistakes. We had a few good passages of play but we didn’t turn up attacking-wise. Our opponent played great for the entire 90 minutes. It’s a painful loss, but we know where we went wrong and it’s about learning from this performance going forward.

Ahmed Kutucu:

It’s not easy in games like this when the opponent is sitting so deep – even the top teams can waste good chances to score. We were not good last season and at a certain point, football becomes all about mentality. It then becomes very difficult to play football, because the whole team doesn’t believe in themselves. This season, we started completely different and regained our confidence. Individuals can only perform at the top of their game if the whole team works. The coach is giving us the confidence we need. He is motivating us. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who scores our goals – the main thing is that the team wins.

Alexander Nübel:

I was happy to be back home and obviously I was really looking forward to the game. We played well from the start and continued to create chances after conceding. Our chance conversion was our downfall in the first half. Our next game against Mainz will be no walk in the park – we’ll approach this game in the same way we approached the ones against Hertha and Paderborn, and we’re pleased to be back in action on Friday.
