Alexander Nübel: We showed a lot of character

Despite an early injury and going behind twice, Schalke still managed to win in Augsburg on Sunday evening (3/11). David Wagner, Alex Nübel and Amine Harit were all pleased with the character the side showed.

David Wagner:

We’re all really pleased that we found the late winner. Anything that can go against us in a game did tonight. We started poorly and Augsburg were really aggressive. We lost our second centre half in a week with Salif Sané going off injured. We had to put a midfielder there – Weston McKennie did a great job. The feeling we can take from this win is almost more important than the three points themselves. A lot of people are talking about Amine’s goal, which was superb, but I think his tracking back and running was more important. I’m so proud when every single player fights like that and shows the right mentality – it helps us win tight games.

Martin Schmidt:

We played very well in the first half and could have scored one or two more. We weren’t clinical enough in their penalty box. We need too many chances to score at the moment. Their equaliser before the break was unlucky from our point of view. It’s a disappointing defeat, as we deserved more from our performance.

Alexander Nübel:

We had to show a lot of character today, which is one of our biggest strengths this season. Salif’s injury was our first blow today. After that, we didn’t get into the game, although we still had good spells of possession. Augsburg made it 1-0 and it was important that we equalised in the first half. We had more of the ball after the break and they didn’t create any chances apart from the penalty. Salif is an important part of our team, but we made up for his absence as a team today.

Amine Harit:

It was a difficult game today. We didn’t begin well and then conceded a penalty in the second half. We played well in the second period, won a lot of free kicks and penalties and scored two more goals. We got the three points today, which is the most important thing! Our team has a great mentality. Other teams might have given up after going 2-1 down, but all of us fight until the final whistle. I scored a nice goal with a good piece of dribbling and finish in the far corner. I’m really happy about it and hopefully I can score more goals like it.
