Miron Muslic: A lot has to go right to get a result against a team like that

After a fiercely contested game at the VELTINS-Arena, head coach Miron Muslic, Robin Gosens and Satoshi Tanaka spoke with pride about Saturday’s (5/9) goalless draw against German record champions FC Bayern. FCB head coach Vincent Kompany also gave his thoughts on the game and congratulated the Royal Blues on earning a point. schalke04.de has rounded up the reaction.

Miron Muslic gestures to the fans after the game.

Miron Muslic:

It’s a special day for us and for everyone at FC Schalke 04. The Bundesliga is back at the VELTINS-Arena. Full credit to my team, we kept a clean sheet against one of the best teams in the world, if not the best. A lot has to go right if you want to get a result against a side like that. We had a good plan, but we had to execute it almost perfectly to get this result. Bayern are incredibly difficult to defend against because they always find an answer and have so much quality, both as a team and individually. They never stop. But neither do we!

Our focus in training this week wasn’t on how good the opposition are. If you spend too much time thinking about that, there’s almost no point turning up against a world-class side like Bayern. Instead, we concentrated on ourselves. Before the game, we said that we wanted to enjoy the defensive side of the game, while knowing there would also be spells when we would have to dig in. You always need a little bit of luck in one or two moments in games like this, but I think we earned that with the passion we showed. Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll give everything in every single game to make sure we’re still here in the Bundesliga next season and can face Bayern again.

Vincent Kompany:

First of all, I’d like to congratulate FC Schalke 04 on earning a point. When you come up against a compact, aggressive side who execute their game plan really well, you have to take your chances when they come. We had our moments and some big opportunities, including two or three one-on-ones with the goalkeeper. But that’s the way football goes sometimes. Schalke deserved their point.

Robin Gosens:

I’m enjoying this moment. I could hardly have asked for a better first competitive game for Schalke at the VELTINS-Arena. Every one of us put in that little bit extra. We knew beforehand how difficult it would be because we all know the quality Bayern have. At times we doubled up on them, and sometimes we even closed them down with three players. That’s what it takes. Perhaps our biggest achievement was maintaining that defensive solidity for the full 95 minutes and sticking to our plan. We worked on it all week and then went out and did exactly what we had set out to do.

Satoshi Tanaka:

I’m very proud to have made my Bundesliga debut against Bayern of all teams. I’m just as proud that we managed to earn a point with such a strong team performance. Of course I was nervous before the game, but the excitement far outweighed the nerves. The coach told me to keep things tight in midfield and stop Bayern getting into our box, so that was something I was constantly focused on. It was a very intense game overall. If I get more opportunities to play, I’ll give everything in those games as well.
