Benjamin Stambouli: A game to forget

Benjamin Stambouli did not really know what to say as referee Christian Dingert blew for full time in Schalke’s game against 1899 Hoffenheim: “It’s hard to find the right words straight after the game.” In the end, Schalke had to admit that their opponents were more effective.

“We weren’t so bad in the first half, but our opponents were effective – two chances, two goals,” said Stambouli. “We tried to equalise after the break. We got a goal back, but unfortunately no more than that. TSG are very strong on the counter and they used that,” he added. Overall, it was a game to forget.

We have to look forward and give everything in the coming weeks.

Despite the defeat, Stambouli has not lost his optimism: “We have to look forward and give everything in the coming weeks.” However, he knows that the next game will be anything but easy: “We have a week to prepare ourselves for the derby. The game is extremely important for the fans, but for us too.”

Stambouli knows from last season just what it feels like to win a derby: “When you win a derby, it’s one of the best feelings in the world. We have to push ourselves to the limit for the game,” he said.
