Breel Embolo: A very special moment

It’s hard to believe, but actually true: Breel Embolo played in his first ever Revierderby on Saturday (27/4). “I was on the bench for the 4-4 last season, which was a great feeling,” said the Swiss striker, who has missed the other three games against the Black and Yellows due to various injuries. The other time, he wasn’t in the squad.

“This game was incredible,” said the 22-year-old, who promised before the game that he would score. He had always thought about what it would be like to score in a derby and now he knows! “It was a very special moment when the ball hit the net. I won’t forget the scenes and celebrations for the rest of my life.”

We wanted to give something back to the fans.

Embolo explained that the 4-2 victory was a gift to the fans. „We wanted to give something back to the fans with the derby victory,“ he said. „They travel week in week out hundreds of kilometres in order to support us and unfortunately have been disappointed recently. Therefore, I am happy that we could make the fans happy with our derby win.”

Proud of the team

The key to the victory on the weekend for the Royal Blues was the team’s togetherness and their disciplined performance. „The coach had us super prepared and we installed the plan as a team,“ said Embolo. „Therefore, I am incredibly proud of us. However, it’s not only the players I’m proud of but also everyone at the club and our fans.“

The most important thing is to take the momentum into the next game. „In the past few weeks we have made too many mistakes and therefore dropped points. We have learnt from it,“ said the striker. The aim once again for the upcoming game this Sunday (5/5) against Augsburg will be three points!
