Cedric Brunner with clear words after Hoffenheim

Head coach Thomas Reis and the players were not spared criticism for the team’s performance in the 2-0 defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday (9/4). The showing in the first 45 minutes was particularly not at the standard for the Bundesliga.

The first half wasn’t good enough for a side in a relegation battle,” said Thomas Reis, and right-back Cedric Brunner was just as clear as he showed his disappointment and anger at the Royal Blues’ poor performance. “It’s an insult to put in such a poor performance in such an important game. I struggle to find the words,” said the 29-year-old, not mincing his words. “We have shown in previous games that we can fight and work hard to make life hard for the opposition. I don’t know why we couldn’t manage that in the first half.”

The first chance came for S04, but Hoffenheim dominated afterwards

The Knappen had a promising start to the game. With less than 60 seconds played, Brunner played a cross into the box from the right-hand side, which Rodrigo Zalazar flicked on to Marius Bülter, who stuck his leg out in the six-yard box, but the winger could only hit the crossbar.

In the second half we showed a reaction, but it was too late.

After this first chance of the match, however, it was the hosts from Kraichgau who took more and more control of the game and created numerous opportunities. S04 goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann was in the spotlight more often than his opposite number Oliver Baumann, who was only called into action once or twice in the second half. “We showed a reaction in the second half, but it was too late,” said Brunner, who was annoyed that the team conceded the goals “in stupid moments” and overall allowed too many chances.

Be fully up for it from the start against Hertha BSC

Over 10,000 S04 fans made the journey to Sinsheim and turned the away game into a home game. Brunner regretted that the supporters weren’t rewarded for their turnout with a better performance and points, but despite all the disappointment he looks ahead to the next task. On Friday (14/4) at 20:30 CEST, S04 will host Hertha BSC under the floodlights at the VELTINS-Arena. Brunner, who knows the importance of the match against the team in 17th place, emphasised that “we have to be fully up for it from the first minute onwards. We have to get the points, as nothing else matters.”
