Cedric Brunner: This really hurts

At the post-match press conference on Saturday, Frank Kramer and Union head coach Urs Fischer both commented on the game at the VELTINS-Arena. Cedric Brunner and Alexander Schwolow gave their opinions in front of the cameras on the 6-1 loss. Schalke04.de has summarised their statements.

Frank Kramer:

This defeat is very painful. The scoreline for one, but also how it came about. We have to defend and assert ourselves better – in front of both our own goal and theirs. We had some good chances in the first half, but we conceded too easily. We drew up our plans after the restart – we wanted to score a quick goal, but that quickly changed 20 seconds in. Union’s goal to make it 4-1 ultimately ended it. We let in two more at the end, which of course should not have happened. We have seen how much physicality you need in the Bundesliga, and we’ve got to do that better in Stuttgart.

Urs Fischer:

Schalke were better in the first half of the match, and our goal to make it 3-1 just before half-time was actually quite lucky. They were more aggressive, more agile and we on the other hand seemed sleepy and sluggish. But we were very efficient. That efficiency, combined with our strength on the counter, is currently giving us the edge. Of course, when you make it 4-1 just after the restart then the game is only going to end one way, and in the end it was too big a scoreline over 90 minutes. The fact that we are high up the table after four games will be a nice boost for some, but I’m only interested in the table after matchday 34.

Cedric Brunner:

To lose 6-1 at your own ground really hurts. The fans did not deserve that, and neither did the club. We can’t let it happen again. That so many stayed and supported us after the game is not something to be taken for granted. So I hope that we can take some points away next weekend at Stuttgart and make our supporters happy again.

Alexander Schwolow:

It’s tough to explain a game like this so soon after the final whistle. We said at half-time that we wanted to get one back quickly. Then we could have got to work and got something. Instead, we conceded almost right after going back onto the pitch. All things considered, it was not enough from us. We will have to discuss this internally, and then quickly get our heads up once again.
